Introduction: Aging GIF Animation in Photoshop

About: Hi, I am John and I love digital art. I like to create all kind of graphic design resources, tutorials and other cool stuff for free :)

In this tutorial we'll create an aging GIF animation using a free online aging filter and Adobe Photoshop. You will learn what settings to apply in order to create a rapid aging gif or a slow one. I will also show you how to create a reverse aging GIF.

Supplies

For this tutorial, you'll need the following resources:

  1. A photo of a young person
  2. An aged version of the same photo
  3. An AI aging tool
  4. Adobe Photoshop

Step 1: Prepare Your Images

To create this aging GIF animation we need two images, one young and one old. You can do this in Photoshop but it is best to use an online AI Aging Filter to generate an old version of your young photo.

Step 2: Generate the Aging Face Image With AI

I will use this face aging online free tool. Upload your photo and then choose to make the subject Younger or Older.

You have to save both young and old images in separate files. Make sure that the two image have the same width and height.

Step 3: Open Photoshop

Go to File > Open and load both images as separate layers in one PSD document. Name the layers Young and Old.

Step 4: Open the Timeline Panel

Go to Window > Timeline to enable animation tools. Click Create Frame Animation in the Timeline panel.

Step 5: Create Animation Frames

Add the young image as the first frame. Duplicate the frame and change the layer visibility to show the old image.

Step 6: Add Tweening for Smooth Transition

Select both frames, then click Tween (icon at the bottom of the Timeline panel). Set the number of frames (e.g., 10-20) for a smooth fade effect.

Step 7: Adjust Frame Timing

Set each frame duration (e.g., 0.1s for smooth playback). Click Forever in loop settings for a continuous animation.

To create the reverse aging GIF, duplicate the first frame and move it to the last position. Then, select the last two frames and click on the Tween icon again. This will create a smooth transition from young to old and vice versa.

Step 8: Export As GIF

Go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). Choose GIF format, adjust quality, and click Save.

Step 9: In Conclusion

This is an easy way to create an aging GIF animation using Photoshop. Try this effect for your own photo and show me your results!
